there’s very few times in elwood’s life that he’s rendered into absolute silence, but this is definitely one of them. it isn’t even out of shock, per say, but out of disgust at himself - in horror, almost. he looks down at aspen, at his beautiful boy and he hates himself for ever making aspen doubt the love he has for him. momentarily, elwood wonders where he went wrong ; has he not said i love you enough, has he not demonstrated how much he cares, has he not been affectionate enough? and then, for a frightening second, he wonders if maybe he just isn’t enough – if he doesn’t have the capacity to prove to aspen how much he adores him simply because he knows, deep down, he won’t ever be able to prove it. whatever the reason, it brings a sinking feeling to his stomach and elwood is only drawn out of his trance at the sting of bitter tears behind his eyes. he’d promised aspen he’d take care of him, look after him, but with four little words and the almost terrified tone, elwood feels like a failure.

                ❛ … baby, of course – of course i love you. i couldn’t love you anymore if i tried, i thought …
—- i’m sorry, i thought you knew … shit, aspen, i’m so sorry.
